This is quite the lake house! Located in an affluent area of Lexington, and spanning a little over 10,000 square feet; what a sizable place to live. This project called for a full-on gut – interior and exterior with structure remaining - and reimagining of space(s). It includes a few expansions, hemmed in by neighboring existing houses.
The brief called for new catering kitchen and entertainment spaces – indoors and out – at the basement, as well, the new basement dining room had to accommodate the owners’ existing sixteen and a half foot long dining table. The basement also includes new covered exterior entertainment space, laundry, exercise room, and wine grotto. The ground floor had to include a new primary wing near the kitchen and garages, a new elevator to service all four floors, and a new two story great room, plus more. The new stair cases are open to above and below, serving as a light well, with an attached new custom screen-wall that spans all four floors.
The second floor introduces four new suites, with en-suite toilet facilities, a new powder room, study nook at the rear, and a new rooftop veranda overlooking the rear yard and lake. It also includes a slide and stair exits from the veranda down to below. The third floor introduces a new spa & yoga room, with accommodating bathroom, kids rompus room, kids project room, and two reading lofts just above the front two second floor suites.
The building takes its aesthetic cues via contemporary Parisian and Swiss influences gleaned from the many travels the owners have embarked on. The form of the building keeps in touch with existing neighborhood context. The front is quite subtle, incorporating new wood louver and covered balconies above and off the front two second floor suites, over two new front bays - skinned with slate shingling. The stone at front is a browned limestone finish, with a new contemporary black canopy below. The brick on the building is alabaster tone, with black windows all over. The rear of the building is much more surprising in form, as the new primary wing angles out from the building to capture lake views, and is clad in slate shingles as well – giving feature to one of the new additions. The second new addition is the new ground floor two story great room, which incorporates more glass, height, and clerestory roof at the center. All of which covers the new entertainment veranda just below.
