HOUSE 1813

Phase 2

This house remains true to its 1950’s suburban Cape Cod form, yet is designed with a more contemporary approach to the new addition and interior remodel. The new roof geometries of the addition, upper dormer at back, and front porch covering are simple yet asymmetric - a nod to the simplicity of both the existing gable and neighborhood context. Utilizing vertical wood paneling as the primary material of the exterior walls of the new addition at back recalls an old barn, yet is not designed for livestock, rather, meant for living in. The interiors provide flexible and open spaces for multiple uses, including accommodation for larger gatherings when desired, a better functioning kitchen, larger family room, guest toilet room, additional shower room on the second floor, and primary suite for the Owners on the first floor.

Working with a modest budget, the project seeks to address multiple goals:

  • Create a recognizable geometry that sensitively integrates the house within its existing context.
  • Design for economy, longevity, and value.
  • Create new functionality for the existing spaces while also blending into the new spaces with a seamless and minimal design approach.
  • Reallocate existing spaces for better functioning of the residence overall.
