The concept for this new breezeway and 4-car garage addition was inspired by the owners’ love of horses and equine architecture. One factor that served as a measure of governing the design, was a particular covenant of ownership in this neighborhood, requiring that any garage must be connected by a continuous roofline to the existing main house. This meant that the positioning of the project was of high importance, as the breezeway had to align with an existing side entry into the main house, the new garage bays had to align with the existing 4-car garages, and car entry had to be as elegant as the existing house facade.
The breezeway and porte-cochère were designed to create both a motor-court, and create a covered entrance as the owners come in from their winding existing driveway. Given the required roof connection; the existing house set the palette of materials for which the new project was to match. The main arch of limestone at-front, stone and brick arches, and the mixture of large and small gabled roofs, were purposeful in helping to make the addition look as if it were built alongside the existing house.
During construction, the owners worked diligently with the contractor and the mason to find close matches for the brick, the stone veneer, the asphalt shingles, and the limestone for the arches. The interior of the breezeway was clad in a stained wood plank that exudes a European-equestrian aesthetic.
“We reached out to Nathan to design a portico and garage extension for our home because of his reputation for high quality work. He didn’t disappoint, but rather exceeded our expectations. He developed a couple schemes for us, but one stood out as our favorite. Casey took that design concept and worked with us as partners every step of the way through several design iterations. No detail was too small. In the end, we are extremely happy with the enhancement to our home and we would highly recommend Casey and Nathan for any project that you want to look better than you ever expected it to be.”
